Potamos Liopetriou

A narrow tidal creek lined with weathered wooden fishing boats — one of the last genuinely working fishing harbours on the island and a favourite of photographers at sunset. There is no entry fee and no development beyond a couple of fish tavernas. It is a short stop rather than a day out, but an atmospheric one.

Visiting Potamos Liopetriou
Potamos Liopetriou is the most painted scene in eastern Cyprus — a narrow creek where the working fishing fleet of Liopetri ties up between reed banks, small jetties and boat sheds. The French poet Arthur Rimbaud passed through here in 1880 — a plaque by the creek records it — and the mouth opens onto a small cove with a sea-view chapel.
Getting there
Ten minutes off the Ayia Napa–Larnaca motorway (Liopetri exit) — an easy add-on to any east-coast day.
Parking
Free informal parking along the creek road and by the fish tavernas at the mouth.
Best time to go
Golden hour — the low light on the boats and reeds is the photograph. Mornings see the fleet come in with the night's catch.
